March 25th to April 8th
Still with my cousin Isadora, from Calakmul’s archeological site we went to Palenque in Chiapas. The town does’nt have much to offer and we found a tour that took us to the beautiful falls of Misol Ha and, and then took us all the way to San Cristobal de las Casas, where we arrived on the saturday 25th in the evening.
We stayed several days in San Cristobal, a beautiful colonial city, and visited the nearby villages, especially San Juan Chamula where the locals, wearing beautiful outfits, practice some typical religious rituals between catholicism and mayas rituals, but photos are not allowed in the church.
We also visited the impressive Cañon del sumidero, close to San Cristobal, home to a lot of birds and animals, as well as the nice city of Chiapa de Corzo, right next to it.
On thusday the 30th and friday the 31st, we rented a car and explored the natural beauties of Chiapas: The Chiflón falls, the las Nubes falls (where we camped), and the Montebello lakes, close to Guatemala.
We left San Cristobal on sunday april the 2nd, to get to Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the Chiapas state, where I could go to the french consulate, and do a “procuration” = give a familiar the power to vote in my name in the next presidential elections. Thiw city doesn’t have much to offer, I didn’t take any pictures. On monday the 3rd we went and camped at the Sima de las Cotorras, a giant hole in the ground, home to thousands of small green parrots, which we were able to witness going out of the hole on the next day at sunrise. Taking pictures was difficult due to their size and their speed… But I tried.
On that tuesday april 4th, we then went to the falls “El Aguacero”, not far away from la Sima de las Cotorras.
On the same day, we went to Puerto Arista by bus, where I saw the Pacific ocean againand its sunsets. We stayed 3 days, and enjoyed the beach despite the heat, before leaving Mexico and North America to get to Guatemala, Which will be the subject for a future post.
