November 20th au 24th

On monday the 20th, in the morning, I left Santiago towards the south, without knowing exactly where I was going. I only knew I had to get by the 24th to Puerto Montt, 1,000km south of Santiago. In doubt, a good solution, instead of flipping a coin, is to hitchhike, and let fate decide! That’s what I did, and after struggling a little to get out of the capital, having hitchhiked several vehicles, and wildcamped one night, I arrived on tuesday the 21st in Pucón, in the lakes region.
I stayed 2 days, and visited the surroundings, in particular the lake Caburgua, and a park called “Cañi Sanctuary” where I climbed to a summit with good views over several snow covered volcanoes.

On thursday the 23rd, I continued my way hitchiking towards Puerto Montt. I like very much this way of travel, as mentionned in other posts. It allows me to meet local people, and understand better the country, its people, their customs, their lives, their daily concerns. Chilean people are very kind and friendly. They speak spanish with an accent as sharp as a knife, and have a lot of specific expressions that only they understand. I felt as if I didn’t speak well spanish anymore, it was weird. A subject about which I talked with several drivers was foreign immigration (from Colombians, Peruvians, Haitians) and its impact on chilean society… Most of the drivers didn’t like it, it’s not only in Europe that people fear immigration… I still met a chilean that had travelled a bit (One of his experience was that he had been a DJ in Spain for a year), that told me “I think mixing cultures is always positive and enriching” 🙂
I arrived to Puerto Montt on thursday night, and on friday I had the time to go around the city before taking a boat for the four next days, to south Patagonia. This will be the subject of another post.
